2008 Spring
"If Spring came but once in a century, instead of once a year,
or burst forth with the sound of an earthquake,
and not in silence, what wonder and expectation there would
be in all hearts to behold the miraculous change!
But now the silent succession suggests nothing but necessity.
To most men only the cessation of the miracle would be
miraculous and the perpetual exercise of God's power
seems less wonderful than its withdrawal would be."
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
, It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!"
- Mark Twain
This series is my response to the very first blooms of spring that appear here in London.
I pick these and take them back to the studio and , they are kept in the refrigerator and then observed and drawn . The flowers lie on my table and are drawn as objectively and painted as acurately as is possible for me as and where they are . This is work of great honesty.
My intention is to mark the time and place of both the season and my experience of it .the challenge I set myself is to present nature and the overwhelming sensuality of the season and to subvert the waves of desire and emotion that overwhelm us all at this time when we engage with the natural world
"These peices are painted on canvas with a sensuosly prepared surface resembling a time worn wall. The sensuality of the surface compliments the cool anaesthetic content of the paintings , giving them a very cool and contemporary look. These paintings regardless of size have a monumental feel and seem create space when placed in an interior."
